The key element in writing a background in introduction is having a classification of your topic. Meaning you need to realize that your readers are not inside your mind. This means you need to walk them through your mind set step by step. The job of your reader is to understand the topic not to decipher the text you have written. They say you cannot lift two watermelons with one hand. It is indeed the case with your background and your entire paper. Because having long, mind-boggling sentences will only leave your readers frustrated and the frustration pushes the to give up reading your paper Writing...ادامه مطلب

Now that you have mentioned the importance of the topic in general, it is time to point out what makes your study worthwhile. This section is where you cite a couple of the studies done in the field and stress how lacking the field is regarding your stance point. The term lacking reflects the generally negative language of this section. A necessary requirment that reflects the significance of your study best.

This part is where you mention the major findings of other researches, it is descriptive since you describe what the others have done. The next part which is more complicated is mentioning the controversies in the field The third part would be a critical evaluation, taking things one step further and talking about the problem from a theoretical and methodological perspective. These are not considered as stages, but rather things you need to cover in your review of literature. How you might decide to do it comes down to you and your taste There are several ways you can order the information yo Writing...ادامه مطلب

This is where you go through the practical details of your research. Some researchers choose the term methodology as the title of this section. Caution must be exercised here because the term methodology is a philosophical term and is more conceed with whether a research is qualitative or quantitative. As it was mentioned earlier, this is the part in which you explain the details of your work, your participants, the instruments, the procedure of how you gathered the data and the way you are going to analyze your data. Hence, there usually are four parts in the methods section of a quantitat Writing...ادامه مطلب

An abstract is your entire work in a nutshell. The rational behind an abstract is to put everything consicely. So if you are writing a paper, the optimal length of your abstract would be about one paragraph. In the case of a dissertation this could expand to one page but not more.

There are several topics that need to be covered in an abstract:

1. purpose of the study

2. methods

3. findings/results

(4. implications)

This last part is not mandated to be covered.

The tense used when writing an abstract for a proposal is future, and for a paper it is past.

Depending on whether you are writing a paper, a proposal or a thesis, the structure of your work might differ. In this post we are going to review these sturctures briefly.   Structure of a paper: - Abstract: which includes an overview of your work, your hypothesis and results - Intoduction: this is where you set the scene and promblematize the issue and explain its importance - Literature review: this is a critical review of what is known and what the problems are - Methods: this section includes an explanation of your approach, details and demographics such as the number of participants and so on - Results: description of what happened, statistical methods, tables, ... -THE TABLES AND GRAPHS MUST BE CONSISTANT WITH APA - Discussion: what the result means and why this is important. You need to answer two questions here, why so and so what. The inrtoduction of your thesis or proposal is an important in many ways. It is the very first impression you make on your readers and it is best you make a strong one. An introduction consists of several parts. The following gives an outline of an introduction and how you can write it. 1.1 Background You give a general background and mention the significance of the matter at hand. 1.2 Statement of the problem  You specify the gap in the bulk of research, what has been missing. Expressions used in this part carry a negative tone, expressions such as however, there has been a lack of, little attention has been given to. 1.3 Purpose of the study For one paragraph you elaborate on the purpose of your study, using example such as this study intends ..., the aim of this study ... . You do not talk about the implications of the study and how your work is important. 1.4 Research hypothesis This is where you mention your hypothesis, H0 or H1 determine the interpretation of your results. 1.5 R Writing...ادامه مطلب

In writing any academic paper there is a certain template to be followed and as mentioned in the previous post, the template used in linguistics is APA6th. It is axiomatic that the going over the entire manuscript would require a lot of time and is absolutely beyond the scope of this post. However, following is going to give you a starting point and familiarize you with the basics. WRITING A PAPER FOLLOWING APA6th STYLE: The pages of your paper need to have a margine of 1inch on each side. They must be double spaced, i.e. there should be a 2-centimeter distance between the lines. And the text must be typed using Times New Roman with a font size of 12.    The outlook of the first page (title page) : This is the general outlook of the first page.   Please note that exept for the title page, all the other pages should have only the title as their header.(WITHOUT RUNNING HEAD) IN-TEXT CITATION: In the previous post we leaed how we can use another author's notions in a paper.  For every researcher, it is one of the primary steps of research to review the related literarture on the topic. As a result of this review, there will be some books and papers parts or notions of which are includedin the final research paper. since we are mandated by both ethics and rules of copy right, we need to mention which parts of the text are taken from other books or papers and also list those books and papers at the end of our paper or book under refrences. Endnote is an easy and quick way of doing so and in this post we are going to explain how it can be used to serve our purpose. The first step is to create a library. To do so open the program and from File-->new,choose the location and save. With your library created, it is then time to add papers to it. this can be done either manually or using a website. Open a data base on your web browser, choose the paper you are looking for and export it into your library.   You might also want to attach the .pdf file of the Writing...ادامه مطلب
